Mixing cement, water, gravel, sand and/or crushed rock requires a good recipe for making successful concrete driveways or cement blocks. This process is done with carefully measured ingredients and the proper temperature. When making cement blocks you will only need cement, sand, water and a block mold.
You can make a cement block mold by hand but there are molds that are not expensive for purchase. Using cement, sand, gravel and water makes the best driveway or walkway for use. It is all in the mixture and the proper temperature much like any food recipe relies upon the proper ingredients, temperature, timing and measurements. This process is very much like baking or cooking in that proper mixing and stirring is required to do it right.
You will be using half as much water as you will the total of all other ingredients. Once you have the cement, sand and water for your concrete block mixture you can start to blend them together. You want to mix the sand and cement together until they are completely mixed before adding water.
You should add the water by creating a trench or crater for the water. Use half of the measured amount of water to begin your mixing and use a rake or a hoe to push and pull the cement and sand until completely absorbed into the water. Repeat the steps by making another crater and put the rest of the water in and stir until completely absorbed. This will make your mixture right for the mold. Put the mixture in molds and let them set until hard. After they are hardened you will have cement blocks.
When you are preparing to replace or make a new driveway you will need a little more consistency in your mixture so you will add cement, sand, gravel and water in this case. You will do the same thing you did for the cement block by making sure the sand and cement are mixed completely and making the crater for the water.
The difference in this project is that before you make the first crater you will add the gravel and make sure it is completely covered by the cement and sand mixture then make the crater and add half the measured water. Again with this project you will stir it by using a rake or hoe. You will repeat this process and make the second crater and use the rest of the measured water as in the above description.
